THE 1/2 PENNY VOTE IS APRIL 24TH

Currently, Tangipahoa Parish School Systems are facing a crisis — a lack of staff for our schools. On April 24th, Tangipahoa residents can vote on the ½ Penny sales tax to increase salaries for all school system staff.

THE STATE OF LOUISIANA WILL GIVE
TANGIPAHOA SCHOOLS AN ADDITIONAL

$5 MILLION A YEAR

If the 1/2 penny sales tax is passed.

Lack Of Funding

Tangipahoa Parish is 69th out of 69 districts in the state of Louisiana for the amount of local and state funding received for schools. However, we are number 3 in putting the money received back into the classrooms to benefit students. By increasing staff wages, the ½ Penny sales tax will continue to provide more opportunities for students. Meaning, when teachers salaries are increased, high school dropout rates decrease by nearly 4%, and student achievements increase by almost 10%. But that’s not all.

If the residents of Tangipahoa choose to fund the school system through the ½ Penny sales tax, the state of Louisiana will give Tangipahoa parish an additional $5 million that will go directly to student activities and programming.

Importance Of
Competitive Wages

The 1/2 Penny sales tax would provide funding for more competitive wages for full-time Tangipahoa employees. Salaries are currently not high enough to compete with surrounding districts. Tangipahoa Parish custodians receive a 22.9% lower salary than the state average, and bus drivers receive 20.7% less than the state average for starting salaries. Competitive salaries will enable the Tangipahoa Parish School System to recruit and retain high quality staff for our parish schools.

Funding the
Future

• Provide before and after school programs
• Reduce classroom sizes
• Fund STEM and art classes
• Increase pathways for vocational certifications
• Expand pre-k 4 programs

The ½ penny sales tax won’t just benefit students
and staff, it will benefit the parish.

Help Needed

When we lack bus drivers, many students don’t have a way to get to school. When we lack custodians, schools are not safe and clean for students.

We need cafeteria workers, so students have meals at school. We need teachers, to reduce classroom sizes and have high quality staff instructing students.
